Wat Oxford-onderzoeker Toby Ord beschrijft in zijn boek The Precipice is hoe we zouden moeten omgaan met zogeheten existentiële risico’s: gevaren die het voortbestaan van menselijke beschaving bedreigen. 	De mensheid kán in actie komen tegen dit soort existentiële gevaren, wat blijkt uit hoe we zijn omgegaan met de dreiging van asteroïden en kometen. In de jaren negentig ontstond lichte paniek toen duidelijk werd dat er constant ontelbare ruimterotsen langs de aarde scheren. 	De afgelopen 75 jaar zijn we steeds langs de afgrond van een kernoorlog gescheerd, maar de boel begint de laatste tijd te escaleren. De VS spelen met het idee om weer kernproeven uit te voeren, en trokken zich terug uit een kernwapenverdrag. Dat is meer dan zorgwekkend, vinden veel deskundigen.

	3. Toekomstrisico’s. Kunstmatige intelligentie lijkt de voornaamste kandidaat voor groot gevaar, al zullen er vast ook nieuwe existentiële bedreigingen ontstaan die nu niet eens voorstelbaar zijn. De discussies over super-AI die de mensheid bedreigt kennen we inmiddels wel denk ik, maar deze fascinerende video verkent toch weer een paar nieuwe ideeën daarover met toekomstdenkers Michio Kaku en Max Tegmark.

	Het blijft koffiedik kijken hoe dit zich ontwikkelt natuurlijk. Maar misschien zegt het verleden van de menselijke ontwikkeling wel iets over hoe de toekomst eruitziet. Deze Harvard-wiskundige probeert de vooruitgang van de mensheid te modelleren aan de hand van de maatschappelijke en economische wetmatigheden uit het verleden. En die modellen voorspellen iets bizars: infinity, oneindige groei en vooruitgang, gekoppeld aan een onwaarschijnlijke versnelling van innovatie in de komende decennia. (Zie de grafiek hieronder.) Kan dat wel goed gaan, vraagt hij zich af.
